Riding to Fresh Foods

The Southeastern PA RC&D Council in partnership with the Penn State Cooperative Extension, local county WIC and Senior Citizen offices, the Community Action Development Commission, USDA-NRCS, and the USDA Ag Marketing Service is conducting a pilot project of providing transportation to WIC participants and low-income senior citizens. The transportation service will take them to local farmer markets throughout the summer of 2006.

Currently many of the coupons provided by the PA Department of Agriculture to these groups are not being redeemed.  A goal of this pilot project is to determine if lack of transportation is one of the barriers for low redemption rates.

Other benefits of the project include increasing the consumption of Pennsylvania fresh fruits and vegetables, increasing small farmer income levels, and reconnecting consumers with food producers.

The USDA Ag Marketing Service is providing the SEPA RC&D Council with a grant to underwrite the project. A  sample brochure and poster can be downloaded using the hyperlinks.

For more information about the project, please contact the SEPA RC&D office, 215-453-9527 Ext. 5, or send an email to, chairman@separcd.org
